John Clapp

John D. Clapp, Ph.D., serves as director of the Higher Education Center. He received his doctorate in social work from The Ohio State University, with a specialization in health and social science research methodologies. His research interests are in alcohol and other drug (AOD) prevention and the evaluation of human service delivery systems and programs. With over a decade of experience as a researcher in the AOD field, he has published more than 65 journal articles and authored more than 75 conference papers. His work has appeared in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs; Addiction; Prevention Science; Drug and Alcohol Review; Drug and Alcohol Dependence, among numerous other top research journals. Dr. Clapp has been awarded more than $16 million in research and evaluation grants and contracts from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism; the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control; University of California Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program; the county of San Diego; and the U.S. Department of Education. He has been an AOD consultant for numerous organizations, including the U.S. Marine Corps and the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Services. He is currently professor, School of Social Work; adjunct professor, Graduate School of Public Health; and director, Center for Alcohol and Drug Studies, all at San Diego State University.
