Treatment
According to Larimer and Cronce’s (2002) extensive review of individually-focused strategies to reduce college students’ heavy alcohol use, studies evaluating on-campus treatment programs are lacking in the research literature.
In 2004, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported that a growing number of campuses are offering support services for students who are dependent on alcohol or other drugs. These services may include weekly support group meetings, including 12-Step meetings; substance free housing; special scholarships; or required participation in community service projects. In some cases, students in recovery are required to sign contracts agreeing to follow-through with support group meetings and other services. There has been no major study of the impact of these programs to date.
