Expanding, Implementing and Evaluating the Impact of a Tri-University Coalition in Reducing and Preventing High-Risk Drinking Among Arizona College Students

This project will expand, implement, and rigorously evaluate strategic environmental activities of the Arizona IHE Substance Abuse Consortium. The goal is to positively influence the alcohol mixed message environments that exist in the campus/communities of the three largest Arizona state universities serving 99,600 students. This project will close gaps in campus and community policy, enforcement, perception, and access that invite high-risk drinking and related violence.

Binge Drinking Initiative on Ohio Campuses
Project Director: Patricia Harmon
The goal of this project is to reduce the environmental factors that contribute to binge or high-risk drinking among college students through the work of a state-level coalition and 36 campus-community coalitions. This project is an expansion of the existing Binge Drinking Prevention on Ohio Campuses initiative. Specific plans include strengthening student involvement and the ability of coalitions to effect policies, increasing the sustainability of coalitions and the involvement of parents, and changing student perceptions about alcohol consumption.

Partners in Prevention

Partners in Prevention is a state coalition comprised of Missouri public colleges and universities. The coalition will provide training, communication networks, and effective evaluations that will teach environmental management strategies and empower students and professionals to create a campus, city and state environment that supports good decision making regarding alcohol use by college students. Strategies will include coalition building, policy review, decreasing mixed messages, providing alternative alcohol-free programming and limiting student access to alcohol.

The Community/Collegiate AOD Prevention Partnership

This project will expand on the San Diego State University/Community AOD Prevention partnership by 1) increasing membership, 2) expanding efforts to the entire San Diego region, and 3) rigorously evaluating an environmental model of AOD prevention. The two main goals are: 1) to demonstrate the feasibility of implementing a five-element alcohol prevention initiative targeting college students based on a model developed for community programs; and 2) to demonstrate that this five-element university-community program is effective in reducing binge drinking and other alcohol-related problems.

The Kentucky Network Project to Reduce High-Risk Drinking Among College Students

This project seeks to reduce high-risk drinking among college students in Kentucky by utilizing a variety of environmental and science-based strategies. The project will develop or expand campus-community coalitions at all Kentucky colleges and universities to reduce high-risk drinking, expand and strengthen the statewide coalition, and reduce misperceptions, barriers, and mixed messages that hinder the reduction of alcohol use.

Pennsylvania’s Efforts to Prevent High-Risk Drinking Among College Students

This effort brings together two leading state organizations concerned with high-risk drinking by college students—the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board and the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universities. These two organizations seek to accomplish the following three goals: 1) formalize and support a State College Alcohol Coalition with representatives from all statewide agencies/organizations with a responsibility, role or interest in this issue; 2) build upon existing regional consortiums of college substance abuse professionals to enhance their knowledge and approaches to solving college alcohol problems through regional collaboration; and 3) advocate and provide resources and assistance for institutions to partner with their local communities to plan and implement campus-community coalitions to prevent high-risk drinking.

This project capitalizes on 14 years of collaboration between the Virginia ABC and state colleges and universities by expanding efforts to a wider network of colleges and universities. Initiatives include a statewide meeting, four regional consortia groups with regional meetings every six weeks, a web site, outcome-based evaluation protocols and ongoing formative evaluation.

Flashing Your Brights College Pilot
Project Director: Otto B. Schultz
This project will implement and evaluate a unique anti-binge drinking strategy. It capitalizes on peer influence on binge drinking by utilizing strategies for brief, informal, peer-based interventions. This project will work with campus coalitions at six pilot colleges and support them in participating in a regional coalition with community leaders and project consultants. The campus coalition will use curriculum infusion and social marketing techniques to reach the peers of binge drinkers.
