ATOD Prevention Specialist, Student Affairs

Position Description

The Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) Prevention Specialist will provide services for the student community as part of the Division of Student Affairs. These services will be based on specific campus population based health status and needs assessment data; as well as, peer reviewed articles of evidence-based interventions. He/she will use the American College Health Association’s Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education, the National Health Objectives as found in the Healthy Campus 2010, and the National College Health Assessment (and/or other college health status surveys) to guide decisions and priorities. He/she will collaborate with the ATOD Prevention Committee and other key faculty and staff throughout the University to implement effective, evidence-based health promotion and prevention services. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

Education/experience/licensing:

  • Master’s degree in public health, health education, health promotion or related field required, or a bachelor’s degree in the above and two years of appropriate experience.
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the American College Health Association’s Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education and Healthy Campus 2010 required.

Communication and other skills:

  • Preferred demonstrated skills in health communication, social marketing, desk-top publishing, population-based health promotion, primary prevention, policy analysis, grant-writing, research and statistical analysis and small group facilitation.
  • Excellent literature review, needs assessment and program planning skills.
  • Excellent listening, oral presentation, written communication and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to understand and address behavioral health concerns of a culturally diverse university student population.
