Director, Afro-American Cultural Center/Assistant Dean, Yale College

Position Description
Yale College invites applications for a Director of the Afro-American Cultural Center/Assistant Dean of Yale College. Reporting to the Dean of Student Affairs, the successful candidate will provide strategic direction for the work of the Center, and supervise its daily operation. This person will serve on Yale College committees and lead various student and academic programs.
Essential Duties of Position:
1. Manage and oversee the Afro-American Cultural Center in all its aspects.
2. Work collaboratively with members of the administration to define the appropriate identity for the Center and to plan for its support and nurture; with undergraduates in developing services, organizing activities, and sponsoring events; and with deans and faculty in academic and personal advising, counseling, and guidance matters.
3. Work with the dean of admissions and his staff, and with the dean of freshman affairs in admitting and aiding integration of Black students into the larger community.
4. Work with a Board comprised of members of the Yale and New Haven communities, and with Alumni, who provide advice and support.
5. Oversee the physical facilities of the Center.
6. Work cooperatively with directors of cultural centers and other organizations to foster intergroup dialogue and enhance intercultural interactions.
7. Oversee programs in Yale College, including serving on committees, chairing committees, running special projects and working for the welfare of all Yale students.
Qualifications: Master's degree in a related field and at least 4 years of experience in administration or management. (Preferred: PhD in related field.) Demonstrable skill and experience in administration and management. Knowledge about issues in the African, Afro Caribbean and Afro American communities and commitment to translating these into a local academic context. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends and holidays.
