Position Description

Southwestern University has an immediate opening for a Temporary Wellness Counselor and Outreach Specialist in the Counseling, Health Services, and Diversity Education Department. This is a temporary full-time position from January 2010-May 2010 with no benefits. This position reports to the Director of Counseling, Health, and Diversity Education. This position will provide wellness outreach services for the campus community in such areas as alcohol and other drug education, sexual assault risk reduction, eating disorder prevention, and sexual health. This position also provides assessment and counseling for students who are experiencing difficulties related to these areas.

Responsibilities: Develop, implement and evaluate educational outreach projects related to wellness areas such as alcohol and other drug education, etc.; select, train and supervise volunteer peer educators to assist with wellness outreach projects; coordinate wellness outreach projects with student organizations interested in supporting these projects; assess and counsel students who are experiencing difficulties in wellness-related areas, including students referred from the SU judicial system as a result of disciplinary infractions related to alcohol and/or drug use.

Qualifications: A masters degree in counseling, one year of work experience in student affairs in a college or university setting, demonstrated ability to work effectively with students and student organizations on developmental and preventive outreach projects, knowledge of diversity as it relates to wellness counseling and outreach, knowledge of basic statistics and research methods, and demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a team. Candidates must also possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with individuals from all constituencies within the University community to support student success.
