Eastern Michigan University

 June 14, 1999

 Dear Parent:

There have been a number of recent reports describing alcohol-related incidents on Michigan campuses. As a response by the state of Michigan, grant funds from the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act have been appropriated through the Department of Community Health to thirteen state universities and colleges to address the issue of underage drinking.

Eastern Michigan University is committed to offering programs that enhance student development while providing a safe and sober environment. A new program to begin in Fall 1999 will continue this dedication. The Social Activities Mentoring Program (SAM) will provide incoming students with the opportunity to meet and socialize with other first year students as well as returning students. This social network of like-minded peers will ensure that students have support as well as social activities and events. A secondary goal is to reinforce your student's decision not to use alcohol and, therefore, reduce the risks associated with its use.

We at Eastern Michigan University know that as parents you are committed to the success of your sons and daughters. We encourage you to have an open and honest discussion about the place of alcohol in your child's life, especially once they arrive at EMU. Our experience indicates that our students do hear what their parents have to say. The decision to join the SAM Program needs to be made by your son or daughter, with your full support.

If you are interested in learning more about SAM, please feel free to contact Deborah Regner, Program Manager, at 734.487.2226. At our University Health Services, we look forward to the start of school and know with your encouragement your student will have an outstanding experience at Eastern Michigan University.

Sincerely,

Laurence N. Smith
Vice President for University Marketing and Student Affairs
