Dear Family of «First_Name» «Last_Name»:

The faculty and staff of the University of Missouri-Rolla work hard to promote a healthy and positive educational environment in which learning can occur and students can develop.

As part of our commitment to create an environment that promotes learning and growth, the University of Missouri has adopted a “Parental Notification Policy” which is based on the premise that the University, students and parents/legal guardians are partners in the creation of our campus environment. There are two major components to this policy.

First, we have enclosed materials which are being sent to all of the parents or legal guardians identified by our students in their data files to facilitate discussion between you and your son/daughter on the use of alcohol or controlled substances. We believe these conversations will have a significant impact on the future decisions your son/daughter will make concerning the use of alcohol or controlled substances.

Second, until your son or daughter’s 21st birthday, or unless you have indicated you do not wish to be notified, University officials may, as permitted by federal privacy law, notify you if your son or daughter has been found to have violated the University of Missouri Student Conduct Code regarding alcohol or controlled substances. This information will be sent to you only once. If you change your mind regarding notification or if your address or phone number changes, you will need to contact us to let us know. A copy of the official policy is enclosed for your review. I encourage you to review it carefully. Should you have questions, please feel free to contact James Seville, Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs office, by calling (573) 341-4292 or through email at jamessev@umr.edu. Should you wish not to be notified of student conduct violations under this policy, please complete the enclosed form and return as indicated.

You have our assurance that alcohol and substance abuse education and support are important components of our student support programs at UMR. The enclosed information and Parental Notification Policy are designed to be supportive of you in your role as a parent/legal guardian. We hope you find them useful.

Sincerely,

Gary Thomas
Chancellor
