For the Press

We encourage press coverage on the issue of high-risk drinking and other drug abuse at colleges and universities. This is a problem at many institutions of higher education, yet there are also effective strategies to address the situation. These strategies focus on the environment in which students make decisions about alcohol and other drugs, rather than simply focusing on the individual, as with education and awareness activities.

The following pages are devoted for members of the press, with links to relevant research, answers to frequently asked questions, our press releases, and examples of what colleges are doing to address the issue of high-risk drinking on individual campuses. Additionally, we have included a section on the term ‘binge drinking’, as use of this term by the press and others has stirred some controversy among professionals in the alcohol and other drug prevention field. We welcome your feedback. Please address comments, questions and suggestions to Helen Stubbs at hstubbs@edc.org.
