Emergency Planning for America’s Schools

The US Department of Education

This two-page document highlights selected elements from “Practical Information on Crisis Planning: A Guide for Schools and Communities,” created in 2003. Created by school safety experts, this is a useful introduction to the phases of emergency preparedness: emergency planning, prevention/mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. For example, in the preparedness section, the document lists aspects of “preparedness,” such as 1) inspecting equipment to ensure it is operational in a crisis and 2) working with law enforcement officials and emergency preparedness agencies on a strategy for sharing school crisis plans.
