The Higher Education Center is pleased to make the following announcements:

1) Call for Proposals: 8th Annual California Higher Education Alcohol & Other Drug Education Conference

The 8th Annual California Higher Education Alcohol & Other Drug Education Conference's mission is to disseminate new knowledge concerning alcohol and/or other drug prevention programs and practices on California college campuses and nearby communities. This might include sharing ideas about best practices, policies, and programs that promote alcohol and/or other drug abuse prevention. Borrowing from the model developed by Dr. James Lange at San Diego State University, programs, which emphasize the following core areas, are sought:

-Individual-focused - Prevention efforts that attempt to change student attitudes, motivations and knowledge about alcohol and other drug issues
-Behavioral Alternatives - Prevention efforts that attempt to provide a channel for safer, less destructive behaviors
-Access and Enforcement - Efforts to restrict access to alcohol or its harmful associated behaviors. Often this is done through enhanced enforcement or policy changes
-Community Action - Activities that help establish a supportive (or less destructive) environment for achieving one of the core objectives
-Research - Systematic data collection and analysis to identify problem areas, provide input for program innovation, evaluate program successes, or develop external resources

Students and professionals may submit program proposals. The submission deadline is Friday, March 13, 2009.

For more information and full submission guidelines, please visit the Proposal section of the 8th Annual California Higher Education Alcohol & Other Drug Education Conference Web site: http://www.csueastbay.edu/alcohol-program/proposal.html.

2) Call for Youth Submissions for 'Free the Bowl' Video Contest

Marin Institute invites amateur submissions for anti-beer ads for the 2009 Free the BowlTM Video Contest.

Year after year, the Super Bowl delivers the largest youth TV audience to the country's top beer seller, Anheuser-Busch. In 2008, an estimated 30 million underage youth viewed more ads for beer than any other single product during the Super Bowl. Millions more viewed beer ads online after the big game. The more youth are exposed to alcohol advertising, the more likely they are to drink, and drink to excess.

Submissions are open to all U.S. residents ages 13-20 and are due by January 25, 2009.

For more information and full submission guidelines, please visit the Free the Bowl Contest section of the Marin Institute's Web site: http://www.freethebowl.com/site/index.php?option=com_content&view=articl....
