The Higher Education Center is pleased to make the following announcements:
1) 3rd Annual North Carolina A&T State University's REMBA Conference
North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University's Rehabilitation Counseling Program is proud to present its 3rd Annual Rehabilitation of Racial & Ethnic Minorities with Behavioral Addictions (REMBA) Conference, "Crossing the Bridges to Recovery: Investigating the Impact of Addictions on Minority Communities," April 16-17, 2009, at The Proximity Hotel, in Greensboro, NC. Registration is $40 for students and $60 for professionals and is due April 3, 2009.
The conference will address effective counseling techniques for individuals experiencing behavioral addictions such as criminal offense and alcohol and drug abuse, among others, and sessions will specifically focus on the impact these addictions have on racial and ethnic minority group members. Rehabilitation counselors, community/agency counselors, counselor educators and supervisors, human resource professionals, administrators, students, and other human service personnel are encouraged to attend. CEU and CRC credits will be offered for attending the sessions, and a call for presentation proposals is open until February 20, 2009.

2) Call for Nominations: U-M Student Mental Health Advocate Award
To recognize outstanding student leadership in the area of campus mental health, the University of Michigan has created the Student Mental Health Advocate Award, which will be presented at the 2009 Depression on College Campuses Conference, March 18-19, 2009.
To nominate a student (undergraduate or graduate), in 300 words or less, please give the student's name, major, college/university, and describe how this student has helped to create a healthier campus community by accomplishing any of the following:
-Raising awareness of mental health issues on campus through education and outreach
-Advocating for mental health services on campus for diverse student population
-Helping to reduce the stigma of depressive illnesses
The U-M Depression on College Campuses Conference Planning Committee will review the nominations and select a recipient. The Committee will pay travel expenses for the recipient to attend the conference and present the award during the banquet lunch on Thursday, March 19, 2009. In addition, the person who nominates the selected student will receive free registration and hotel accommodations for the conference.
Submit nominations to Trish Meyer: meyerpa@umich.edu. The deadline for nominations is February 13, 2009. The award recipient will be notified by February 20, 2009.
