The Higher Education Center is pleased to make the following announcements:

1) New Example from the Field from the Higher Education Center: How One Campus Implemented an In-person Bystander Sexual Violence Prevention Program and Social Marketing Campaign

The U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention is proud to announce the addition to its Field Examples page of the case study on the University of New Hampshire's (UNH's) approach to sexual violence prevention. The Center prepared the case study on behalf of the Department's Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools.

The Bringing in the Bystander prevention program provides a framework for training community members to become more sensitive to issues of sexual violence and teaching them skills to intervene with the intent to prevent assaults from occurring and support survivors. The bystander approach teaches how to intervene safely and effectively in situations that involve sexual violence. While still involving programming that trains groups of individuals, the program at the UNH takes next steps toward a broader community approach to prevention. The bystander model gives all community members a specific role with which they can identify and adopt in preventing the community problem of sexual violence. This role includes interrupting situations that could lead to assault before it happens or during an incident, speaking out against social norms that support sexual violence, and having skills to be an effective and supportive ally to a survivor after an assault.

2) New Online Course for CEUs from Join Together: The Role of Medication in Substance Use Treatment

Join Together is offering a new free continuing education activity for addiction counselors. This two-part activity has been made possible through an educational grant from Alkermes and Cephalon, and has been designated for up to 1.0 CEUs. Part 2 of the course will launch later this month and will also be designated for CEU credit.

The Role of Medication in Substance Use Treatment focuses on helping patients understand how medications for addiction treatment can be part of a comprehensive program to help them regain control over their lives.

Part 1, now available online, is designed to help participants learn:

-How substance use changes brain chemistry.
-How these biological changes create barriers to long-term abstinence and recovery.
-How medications for addiction can help address these barriers and improve treatment outcomes when combined with counseling, peer support and other important tools.
