The Higher Education Center is pleased to make the following announcements:

1) Higher Education Center's 2009 November e-Fact Sheet, Curbing Alcohol-Related Problems at College Sports Events, Now Posted

Curbing Alcohol-Related Problems at College Sports Events: The athletics season at colleges and universities is well under way, with college football games drawing millions of spectators. For example, Clemson University, with an enrollment of 17,000 students, is located in Clemson, S.C., with a population of approximately 12,000. But Clemson Memorial Stadium, which can seat more than 80,000 football fans, is often filled to capacity. And game days at colleges and universities across the nation are often accompanied by daylong drinking and partying. In addition, college football games and other sports events, steeped in a tradition of rivalry between schools, have long been associated with rowdy and risky behavior fueled by alcohol.

3) National Study to Examine Coping and Suicidality among College Students Invites Participants

The University of Texas at Austin is leading the National Research Consortium of Counseling Centers in Higher Education (http://cmhc.utexas.edu/researchconsortium.html) in the development of a second national study to examine coping and suicidality among college students. This study will expand and build on the 2006 survey of college students' suicidal crises, which brought together 70 colleges and universities and garnered attention in the national media.

The purpose of this new study is to:
1) Inform the development of campus-wide suicide prevention initiatives
2) Enhance clinical treatment of students in suicidal crises

This webinar will overview how the study design under consideration will help us achieve these goals. Benefits and requirements of participation will also be discussed, and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions.

Benefits reported by prior participants:
- School-specific data identified campus mental health needs, which bolstered grant applications and other funding opportunities
- Findings guided the creation of new programs and the improvement of existing programs
- Minimal investment of time for campuses to participate because the study is centrally coordinated by UT Austin's Counseling and Mental Health Center
