The Higher Education Center is pleased to make the following announcements:
1) SAMHSA Grant Announcement: Campus Suicide Prevention Grants
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2009 for Campus Suicide Prevention Grants. The purpose of this program is to facilitate a comprehensive approach to preventing suicide in institutions of higher education. Applications are due by November 25, 2008, and eligibility is limited to institutions of higher education.
This program is designed to assist colleges and universities in their efforts to prevent suicide attempts and completions and to enhance services for students with mental and behavioral health problems, such as depression and substance abuse, which put them at risk for suicide and suicide attempts.

2) Train-the-Trainers Opportunity: "Strengthening Military-Civilian Community Partnerships to Respond to Sexual Assault"
The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR) is committed to providing technical assistance and training to sexual assault advocates and state anti-sexual violence coalitions. In order to support and enhance the capacity of civilian anti-sexual violence advocates working with military installations to address sexual violence issues and advocate for the rights and needs of victims living and working within those institutions and communities, PCAR through a grant from the Office for Victims of Crime and the Office on Violence Against Women has developed a training curriculum and tool kit and is now ready to provide training to sexual assault advocates across the country.
This training will be held December 2-3, 2008, at The Four Points Sheraton, in Washington D.C. The application deadline is November 1, 2008.
Guidelines for the Train-the-Trainers are as follows:
-Attendance must be in teams of, one Advocate, and one SARC (Sexual Assault Response Coordinator) with whom collaboration has been established or looking to strengthen the relationship
Application should include:
-Brief biography (maximum 50 words); resumes, which should include all experience as a trainer or educator.
-An outline (not to exceed 100 words) on how the applicant will put this training to use and who will be the audience.
Other requirements:
-Participants must provide one training within three to six months after attendance of the train-the-trainers, and submit the evaluations and attendance rosters to PCAR for record-keeping.
-By registering for the train-the-trainers, participants will be included in a database which will be maintained for referrals for training.
-Attendance for the entire train-the-trainers training, which is two full days.
