"SIUE's underage drinking rate has gone down again, and the university is taking steps to keep it that way..."

"Hays said the police department focuses on "proactive interaction" and a more visible presence in the early months of each year, when new students are feeling their way on a parent-free on-campus experience. That's usually when they test the limits the most, she said..."

"In addition, SIUE now has the ability to contact parents when an alcohol offense takes place. Previously, students over 18 could keep an alcohol bust from their parents, but the legislature has now decreed that Student Affairs can contact parents even if the student is over 18 but under 21..."
