HEC/News Assistance

If the link provided in the HEC/News service message is not retrieving the article you wish to read, here are a few troubleshooting approaches to access the article.

Problem Source:

The article may have been archived to a new location (URL) on the news outlet's Web site. This occurs on many sites after several days have elapsed from date of publication.

Solution:

Go to the news outlet's home page and access the archive or search section. You may search using a variety of terms, but most often using the name of the article or the name of the author as your search term will yield the article you are looking for. If possible, select the date the article was published.

Problem Source:

Some online news outlets do not archive their articles, and thus no archive or search section is available.

Solution:

Contact the news outlet to request a reprint.

Problem Source:

You are asked to register using a username and password in order to gain access to the article you want.

Solution:

In some cases this registration is free, as is the case with the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and other large outlets. Simply offer the necessary information to register and access the article. Once you receive a prompt automatic e-mail confirmation, access is immediate.

However, other news sources require a subscription before accessing their online articles; in this case, you must pay to access the article.
