Preventing Violence and Promoting Safety in Higher Education Settings: Creating Comprehensive and Effective Programs

This online training was offered as a moderated course over a two-week period, July 18–29, 2011. This training is designed for professionals working on violence prevention in higher education settings, including community partners in campus-based prevention efforts.

Overview

Effective violence prevention efforts require a comprehensive, coordinated set of programs, policies, and services that are research-based and adapted to local circumstances. This online training will introduce participants to a set of principles and a strategic planning process that campus and community stakeholders can use to design a comprehensive and effective violence prevention initiative. The training will touch on multiple aspects of effective strategic planning, including assessing problems on campus, using data to inform strategy design, coordinating prevention efforts, building prevention infrastructure, and working in partnerships. This session benefits participants whose primary responsibilities include violence prevention as well as other stakeholders who collaborate with violence prevention practitioners.

After participation, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the key elements of a framework for violence prevention in higher education, including a set of principles and a planning process.
  2. Identify sources for relevant data and research to describe campus-specific problems and related risk and protective factors.
  3. Use that information to create violence prevention efforts that are strategic and tailored to local needs and priorities.
  4. Analyze current efforts and increase the extent to which each one has clear goals and objectives, follows best practices, and is coordinated and synergistic with other efforts.
  5. Access additional Higher Education Center products and services.

Format and Moderation

The training will be moderated, which includes opportunities to share ideas with other participants and receive feedback from Center staff on assignments. This training will use a mix of exercises and activities to enhance understanding and help participants apply the concepts to their own campus and community context. Participants will be asked to complete a pretraining assignment before beginning. The training itself has two modules, each with applied learning activities, interaction with other participants on a discussion board, and an assignment. Facilitators are available for questions throughout the two-week training and will review and provide feedback on assignments. The estimated time commitment over the two-week period is approximately 16 hours, and participants may log in to the course at any time of the day or night.

Instructions for Team Participation

Individuals or groups are welcome to participate. If you are participating as part of a campus and community team, all participants should register for the course, view the content separately, and complete the activities. The group can then meet periodically during and/or after the course to discuss the content, activities, and application to their campus community.
