The Spring 2010 issue of Catalyst (Vol. 11, No. 2) has just been published and posted to the Higher Education Center's Web site. Catalyst discusses emerging issues and highlights innovative efforts on campuses that may be helpful to institutions of higher education. The current Catalyst issue focuses on how campuses and communities can leverage existing work, partnerships, and resources to extend prevention efforts. Articles include topics demonstrating the efficient uses of resources, how prevention can be both low cost and effective, and what needs to be done to demonstrate why investment in prevention makes fiscal as well as programmatic sense.

Articles from this issue include:

  • “Redefining Resources for Prevention”
Colleges and universities across the country are expanding their resources for prevention by redefining how they think about them and are finding new resources that, previously overlooked, can be inexpensive, accessible, and effective.
  • “Environmental Management Strategies: Low-cost Prevention”
In the environmental management approach to prevention most of the work that needs to be done costs little or no money but only requires staff to realign their priorities and refocus their energies.
  • “Going Grantless”
Health services staff at the University of Central Missouri decided to see what they could accomplish without grant support.
  • “Students as a Resource for Prevention Research and Evaluation”
One way that campuses can be accountable to others for their investment in prevention is to engage students in prevention research and evaluation.
  • Network Section: “Prevention on a Shoestring at Montana State University: A Q&A With Jenny Haubenreiser”
MSU has been able to sustain its prevention initiatives with and without grant funding, and regardless of the source of funding. Haubenreiser describes those efforts for both campus and community prevention efforts.
