The Summer 2010 issue of Catalyst (Vol. 11, No. 3) has just been published and posted to the Higher Education Center's Web site. Catalyst discusses emerging issues and highlights innovative efforts on campuses that may be helpful to institutions of higher education. The current Catalyst issue focuses on mental health, violence prevention, and alcohol and other drug issues, looking at the intersections of mental health, violence, and alcohol and other drugs when it comes to developing integrated prevention efforts.

Articles from this issue include:

  • “From Competition to Collaboration: College Alcohol Prevention in an Era of Competing Risks”
Having effective alcohol prevention and intervention systems in place is as critical now as it was when the national media focused its lens on this campus problem.
  • “A Public Health Approach to Mental Health Promotion,” by Laurie Davidson
Changing how administrators respond to student mental health problems requires a paradigm shift.
  • “Supporting Mental Health Services at the University of Minnesota”
This campuswide mental health program, called the Provost’s Committee on Student Mental Health, can be a model for colleges across the country.
  • “Syracuse University Trains Gatekeepers to Identify At-Risk Students,” with sidebar “Strategic Planning for Gatekeeper Training and Suicide Prevention”
Broadly defined, gatekeep¬ers are those individuals who are in regular contact with students and, as a result of that contact, are in a position to assist in identifying and referring students to appropriate mental health resources.
  • Network Section: “Relaying the Message: News from the Front,” by Robert J. Chapman
Begun in August 2002 as a simple weekly e-mail this correspondence with the field matured into a formal newsletter that was pub¬lished regularly throughout the academic year until early in 2009.
