The U.S. Department of Education’s Higher Education Center Announces New Director and Services

Each week, the Higher Education Center showcases recent developments in the field of AOD abuse and violence prevention in higher education that may include new data and resources, upcoming events and programs, funding opportunities, and learning opportunities. The Higher Education Center for Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Violence Prevention is pleased to announce renewed funding from the U.S. Department of Education and the addition of its new Center director, John D. Clapp, Ph.D.

Dr. Clapp is also currently professor, School of Social Work; adjunct professor, Graduate School of Public Health; and director, Center for Alcohol and Drug Studies, all at San Diego State University. With over a decade of experience as a researcher in the alcohol and other drug prevention field, he has published more than 65 journal articles and authored more than 75 conference papers. His work has appeared in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs; Addiction; Prevention Science; Drug and Alcohol Review; Drug and Alcohol Dependence, among numerous other top research journals.

The Higher Education Center offers publications, trainings, and technical assistance, free of charge, to all institutions of higher education in addressing their alcohol, other drug abuse, and violence (AODV) prevention needs using effective, research-based strategies.

Center services include:

  • Customized opportunities for technical assistance, including on-site, and via e-mail and telephone
  • An e-Forum discussion to share information and connect the AODV prevention field
  • Biweekly e-Digest with current AODV prevention topics, news, research, resources, and conferences
  • Web-based searchable database of Center resources, products, and services
  • Information about U.S. Department of Education–specific initiatives related to AODV prevention in higher education
  • Special meetings on current and emerging topics
  • Online trainings, training institutes, and Webinars
  • Publications collection, including its newsletter, Catalyst, and monthly e-Fact Sheets
  • Needs assessment, strategic planning, and evaluation support and assistance
  • The latest research related to campus-based AODV prevention
  • Web content for specific audiences (e.g., parents, students, campus presidents) on alcohol, drug abuse, and violence prevention topics
