About Community Services Block Grants

Through Community Services Block Grants, you can get funds that are set aside for alleviating the conditions and causes of poverty in local communities. These grants are now available in:

  • Agencies for seasonal farm workers and migrants
  • All 50 states
  • Community Action Agencies
  • Other organizations that are specifically designated by states
  • State and federally -recognized tribal organizations and Indian Tribes
  • The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico
  • The District of Columbia
  • U.S. Territories

These grants also provide funding to support projects that are designed to lessen poverty in American communities as well as address the needs and requirements of low-income American residents, including migrants, the elderly, and the homeless.

Further, the funds can be used to provide activities and services to address education, employment, better use of income, nutrition, emergency services, housing, and other health related issues.

Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant

One of the most common forms of Community Services Block Grants is the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant. Also known as SABG, this program is designed to provide technical assistance and funds to all the areas listed above. Recipients of these grants can use them to evaluate, implement, and plan activities designed to treat and prevent substance abuse and addiction as well as promote other public health causes.

  • In need of primary prevention services
  • In need of tuberculosis services
  • Intravenous drug users
  • Pregnant women
  • Women with alcohol and drug dependent children
