Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers in Alaska

With a population of over 740,000 residents, Alaska is one of the most sparsely populated states in the nation. However, this has not stopped it from coming into the national limelight for the high rates of substance abuse and addiction being reported among its citizens.

Addiction in Alaska

The rates of addiction in this state are also surprisingly high. In fact, Alaska was ranked among the top 10 American states in terms of the following categories of substance abuse and addiction:

  • Illicit drug use within the past month by people aged above 12
  • Illicit drug use within the past month by young adults aged from 18 to 25 years
  • Cocaine abuse in the past year by people aged above 12

At the same time, about 12 percent of the residents of Alaska reported that they had used illicit drugs in the month prior to a study in 2010. This was surprising because the same year the total national average for similar rates of substance abuse were at 8 percent.

According to the NSSATS or the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services for 2006, the state had several addiction treatment programs. Even so, these programs were not enough to meet the growing need for these services among local residents.

That said, the following are the most commonly available substances of abuse in Alaska:

  • Alcohol
  • Amphetamines
  • Cocaine
  • Codeine
  • Hashish
  • Heroin
  • Hydrocodone
  • Marijuana
  • Meth
  • Morphine
  • Opioids
  • Prescription Drugs
  • Sonata
  • Subutex
  • Trazodone
