Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers in Florida

Florida is like any other American state in the sense that many people here struggle with substance use disorders. This is not entirely surprising when you consider that there are many substances of abuse in this state.

Addiction in Florida

In 2014, more than 410,000 residents of Florida were reported to be struggling with an addiction. Some two years later in 2016, over 5,000 people suffered a fatal or near-fatal drug overdose.

By 2017, the drug problem had reached such high proportions that the governor declared a state emergency for this problem. Additionally, he proposed that the state government should set aside about $54 million to be used for prevention, treatment services, grants, and education programs while dealing with this growing crisis.

This is not entirely surprising when you consider that Florida is ranked 5th in terms of the rates of drug related violent crimes. At the same time, there are many substances of abuse in this state, including:

  • Alcohol
  • Cocaine
  • Heroin
  • Marijuana
  • Methamphetamines
  • Opioids
  • Sedatives
  • Stimulants
  • Tranquilizers

Other figures related to the drug abuse and addiction crisis in this state include:

  • Between 2003 and 2012, a total of 8,000 drunk driving fatalities were reported in the state
  • From 2003 to 2012, prescription drugs were responsible for 15301 deaths in Florida
  • From 2015 to 2016, the state lost a total of 305 lives to a meth overdose
  • In 2015 too, Florida lost 5725 lives as a result of opioid abuse
  • In 2015, cocaine was responsible for 1834 fatalities
  • In 2016, the state lost 952 residents to a heroin overdose

Addiction Treatment in Florida

Although there are many drug related problems in Florida, many of its residents seek help for these conditions. According to SAMHSA - the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration - for instance, the state reported a total of 79,322 admissions in its drug rehab centers in 2009. This number accounted for 38.3 percent of female patients and 61.7 percent of male patients.

However, the state only has about 716 facilities providing addiction treatment and rehabilitation services. It also has 82 drug courts serving to end drug related incidents and crimes among residents.

Florida has also put in place various programs and initiatives designed to deal with the drug crises it is facing. These programs are typically run by the state Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program, the Department of Children and Families, and the Department of Health.

While struggling with a substance use disorder, the best thing that you can do is check into an addiction treatment and rehabilitation facility. By so doing, you will be able to get the help that you need to overcome your addiction and any other co-occurring medical and mental health disorders that you may also be struggling with.

They would typically offer you the following services to help you in your recovery:

  • Activity therapy
  • Aftercare planning
  • Anger management
  • Couples and family therapy
  • Inpatient detoxification
  • Inpatient drug and alcohol rehab
