Addiction in Indiana

SAMHSA - the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration - released a report in 2010 showing that Indiana had a total of 24,054 people enrolled in an addiction treatment and rehabilitation program. The year before, the state had about 290 such programs. Of this programs, 156 provided dual diagnosis treatment.

In 2008, the Office of National Drug Control Policy reported that prescription medications were the most commonly abused intoxicating substances in this state after marijuana or cannabis.

In 2010, the Prevention Resource Center in Indiana showed that there was a decline in the abuse of alcohol by children and teens in the state. However, the same population reported an increase in the rates of marijuana and smokeless cigarette abuse.

Other commonly abused substances in this state include:

  • Alcohol
  • Cocaine
  • Heroin
  • Marijuana
  • Prescription Drugs

At the same time, it seems that Indiana continues losing lives as a direct result of drug and alcohol abuse. In particular, 827 people died in this state between 2007 and 2008. During the same time, the state had a total of 28 drug courts.

In 2003, the state made 1688 drug related arrests. However, this number had increased to 2720 by 2007 going to show that far more people in Indiana continue abusing illicit substances.

According to the CDC or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Indiana lost 1526 to a drug related overdose incident in 2015 only. Of this number, more than 750 lives were lost as a result of an opioid like heroin. In particular, heroin was responsible for more than 297 deaths in this state in 2016.

Addiction Treatment in Indiana

To counter these drug related problems, the state of Indiana has been providing various aids to help people who are addicted to intoxicating substances. There are prescription drug abuse symposiums held here every year, for instance. Additionally, the state has been trying to reduce the total number of prescriptions that its doctors write.

If you have a substance use disorder, however, you can only get help from a professional addiction treatment and rehabilitation program. Checking into one of these programs will allow you to access the following services that could reduce your addiction and completely eliminate it:
