Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers in Maine

Although there are several addiction recovery programs in Maine, many people here do not seek help from these programs. This is in spite of the fact that there are some residents of the state struggling with various substance use disorders.

Addiction in Maine

According to the Department of Health and Human Services for Maine, the following are some of the figures relating to the rates of substance abuse by young people aged between 18 and 25 in the state:

  • There is a high likelihood that people in this age group could abuse prescription painkiller medications
  • 9 percent engage in heavy drinking on a regular basis
  • 5 percent of these people abused cocaine
  • 32 percent of this age group engage in binge drinking on a regular basis
  • 10 percent of these people have used a prescription medication for a non-medical purpose at least once

Another report released the results below:

  • There was an increase in the rates of drug overdose fatalities reported in Maine between 2011 and 2014
  • People aged between 30 and 34 showed the highest rates of drug overdose fatalities in 2014
  • Overdose deaths linked to illicit substances rose from 17 to 75, or 341 percent from 2011 to 2014
  • Overdose deaths involving heroin and morphine increased from 9 to 57, or about 533 percent from 2011 to 2014
  • Overdose deaths involving cocaine increased from 13 to 34 between 2011 and 2014, or about 85 percent
  • Over 3 percent of the adult females in the state enrolled in a recovery program in 2014 were also pregnant
  • Emergency responders were able to administer naloxone to over 829 residents in 2014 alone
  • Drug overdose fatalities involving benzodiazepines increased from 41 to 70, or about 71 percent from 2011 to 2014
  • Drug overdose deaths linked to fentanyl increased from 14 to 43, or about 207 percent from 2011 to 2014
  • Drug overdose deaths in Maine increased from 155 to 208 between 2011 and 2014, or about 34 percent
  • About 8 percent of the expectant women in the state in 2012 said that they still drank alcohol on a regular basis
  • 58 percent of the people in drug rehab programs also had a co-occurring medical or mental health disorder

Addiction Treatment in Maine

In 2009, a total of 145,605 people checked into an addiction treatment and rehabilitation program in the state. Some two years earlier in 2007, however, the state lost a total of 161 lives to a drug overdose incident.

To counter these problems, the state has the following programs in place:

  • Providing prevention services through its Department of Health and Human Services
  • Prescription monitoring programs
  • Mass-Reach Health Communication
