Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers in Massachusetts

Massachusetts is one of the most historic states in the Union. However, it has also gone on the national headlines for the relatively high rates of substance abuse and addiction affecting its residents.

Addiction in Massachusetts

The NSDUH - or the National Survey on Drug Abuse and Health - for 2014 reported, for instance, that over 13 percent of the total population of the state aged 12 years and older abused illicit drugs on a regular basis.

Similarly, the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services in Massachusetts reported that opioids were among the most commonly cited substances of abuse by people checking into an addiction treatment and rehabilitation program in the state. Opioids were closely followed by alcohol.

Other commonly abused drug in this state include:

  • Others at 4 percent
  • Opioids at 58 percent
  • Marijuana at 5 percent
  • Alcohol at percent

In 2010, TEDS - Treatment Episode Data Set - reported that more than 87,000 people were enrolled in an addiction treatment program in the state. Of these admissions, the great majority involved heroin abuse and addiction.

Similarly, the same data set reported that more than 50 percent of the drug rehabs in the state were focused on treating substance abuse. Another 30 percent provided dual diagnosis treatment for both substance abuse and co-occurring mental health and medical disorders.

Some years earlier in 2007, the state lost 1,003 lives to a drug related incident. Similarly, Massachusetts reported a total of 20,626 incidents involving a drug violation by its residents. Unfortunately, over 10 percent of all these drug violations were by juveniles in the state.

According to the ONDCP - the Office of National Drug Control Policy - a total of 11746 residents were taken to court for a DUI or DWI charge in 2007. By 2009, the state saw a total of 334 fatalities on its roads linked to alcohol.

According to NIDA - the National Institute on Drug Abuse - Massachusetts is one of the top 10 states in the union in terms of the rates of opioid abuse and addiction. From 2011 to 2015, the state saw an increase of 256 percent in the rates of hospital visits linked to heroin. Between 1999 and 2010, Massachusetts also reported a 6 fold increase in the rates of fatality caused by prescription opioids.

To deal with the substance abuse and addiction program, the state has instituted the State without StigMA program, Good Samaritan laws, and an increase in the dispensation of naloxone.
