Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers in Michigan

Research studies have reported that Michigan has been experiencing the 4th highest rate of drug and alcohol abuse problems in the country. If you are among these people, it is imperative that you seek help for these problems by looking for a professional addiction treatment program.

Addiction in Michigan

Alcohol, opioids, heroin, cocaine, and marijuana are the most common substances of abuse in this state. These substances are commonly cited by people checking into a drug rehab in Michigan.

The state has also been experiencing a high rate of drug overdose deaths for several years now. According to SAMHSA - the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration - over 65,029 people were enrolled in a treatment program in 2010 in this state.

By 2006, the state had a total of 539 such programs offering help with substance abuse and addiction. The same year, however, Michigan had one of the lowest rates of unmet needs for addiction treatment for people aged between 12 and 17.

That said, the following are the most common substances of abuse in this state:

  • Prescription Drugs
  • Marijuana
  • Heroin
  • Cocaine
  • Alcohol

By 2008, the state had 84 specialized drug courts. Some years before in 2006, more than 32,000 people were arrested for committing a drug related crime. By 2009, over 38,000 people were arrested for driving while intoxicated on alcohol while an additional 19,233 were arrested for violating an alcohol law in the state. The same year, Michigan reported a total of 246 traffic fatalities involving alcohol.

Some years before in 2007, 1,542 people died as a direct result of substance abuse. The same year, driving while intoxicated on these substances was the reason why 41 people died.

Additionally, the DEA - the Drug Enforcement Administration - seized 174 meth labs in Michigan. This number had increased to a total of 679 seizures by 2009, barely two years later.

In 2007, Michigan arrested 16,512 people for marijuana possession, and an additional 3,000 people for selling this substance. Marijuana related arrests, in fact, accounted for about 56 percent of the total number of drug arrests made in the state.

Addiction Treatment in Michigan

Today, there are several programs in place in Michigan to deal with the growing substance abuse and addiction crisis plaguing its residents. Examples of these programs include:

  • Public awareness campaigns by the Attorney General of Michigan to quell the meth problem in the state
  • Good Samaritan Laws
  • A standing order from the governor allowing pharmacists and doctors to dispense and distribute naloxone to residents even without a prescription

If you are already addicted to drugs or alcohol, these prevention programs might not always be useful. However, you can get help from one of the many addiction treatment and rehabilitation programs that exist in the state. These programs will ideally offer you a mix of the following recovery services:

  • Substance abuse counseling
  • Short term drug rehab
  • Relapse prevention
  • Outpatient individual counseling
  • Long term rehab
  • Inpatient drug rehab
  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Group therapy
  • Detoxification
  • Behavior modification
  • Anger management
  • Aftercare planning and programming
  • 12 step support group meetings
