Addiction in New York

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health for 2015 and 2016 reports the following information about the rates of substance abuse in New York:

  • 2.55 percent of the adult population of New York - more than 392,000 people - abused cocaine at least once in their lives
  • 11.4 percent of the adult population - over 1.7 million people aged 18 years and older reported abusing illicit drugs like marijuana at least once in their life time
  • 0.45 percent of the population of New York aged 18 years and older - more than 68,000 people - abused heroin at least once in the year prior to the study
  • 3.98 percent of the adult population - more than 60,000 people - had taken a prescription medication for a non-medical reason
  • More than 27 percent of the residents of the state - more than 4 million people - engaged in a binge drinking session at least one time in the month before the survey

In 2016, the state also lost a total of 3,638 lives as a result of a drug overdose incident involving opioids. This was 32.4 percent more than the number of lives that New York lost in 2015.

According to SAMHSA - the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration - over 281,780 people were admitted in a drug rehab program in the state in 2014. This amounted to 73.3 percent of men and 26.7 percent of women.

From 2012 through to 2013, more than 2.8 percent of the population of New York aged 12 years and older were abusing illicit substances. This was more than 462,000 people. Unfortunately, only 12.8 percent of this number went for addiction treatment services.

But what are the most common substances of abuse in the state? Consider the following list:

According to the local Department of Health, over 42 percent of the inmates in New York City were struggling with addiction in 2012. An additional 33 percent of this population also had a serious mental health disorder while another 50 percent received a dual diagnosis for both of these conditions.

In 2010, the local Department of Correctional Services reported that over 83 percent of the state's incarcerated population was in need of addiction treatment and rehabilitation services of various kinds.
