Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers in North Carolina

Like any other American state, North Carolina has been struggling with various substance use disorders. However, it seems prescription opioids and illicit opioids such as heroin are to blame for most of these problems. This is even though there are many other substances of abuse available in the state.

Addiction in North Carolina

The National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services survey for 2010 reported that the state had more than 400 programs offering addiction treatment and rehabilitation services. 137 of these programs provided dual diagnosis treatment for both addiction and a co-occurring medical or mental health disorder. Another 211 of them only focused on addiction recovery services.

According to the same report, a total of 33,029 people were enrolled into one of these programs. Another 2,016 people checked into a similar program for both alcohol and drug abuse.

The same survey reported that over 21 percent of these programs had a medically managed detox program in place but only abuse 25 percent of them also had services dealing with mental health disorders over and above addiction.

According to the IVPP - the Injury and Violence Prevention program - that ran between 2009 and 2012, most addiction cases in North Carolina were caused by the abuse of medications - including both prescription drugs like opioids and over the counter medicines. These drugs were responsible for more than 68 percent of all the drug related deaths reported in the state. The same report showed that cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine were responsible for over 60 percent of the drug related fatalities that were reported in this state.

Between 2009 and 2012, a total of 1,830 people were enrolled into an emergency room in the state because they were suffering from drug poisoning or drug overdose. During this period, adults were 4 times as highly likely as children to be admitted into hospital for this reason.

The State Library's Digital Collection additionally reported that North Carolina had 45 dedicated drug courts from 2009 to 2010. These courts include 12 family drug courts and 4 juvenile courts.
