If you live in West Virginia, you might find yourself struggling with addiction. This is because there are many intoxicating substances that could lead you down this dangerous and harmful road.

Addiction in West Virginia

There are many reasons why you may start abusing drugs and drinking alcohol. It could be because you are looking to self-medicate for a mental health or medical disorder. It might also be as a result of your ongoing need to overcome some of the problems and stresses of everyday life. However, you may also start doing this out of curiosity, due to peer pressure, or in a bid to get into a party mood.

Today, research studies show that West Virginia has a high rate of substance abuse. It also experiences drug overdoses at high rates. Most of these problems are linked to opioids.

The DEA - the Drug Enforcement Agency - also recently reported that about 10 percent of all the residents of this state struggle with substance use disorders involving various drugs.

This is why it is not entirely surpassing that more than 6,000 people received drug rehab services in West Virginia in 2009. This number has remained relatively constant for several years now.

Between 2005 and 2006, more than 42,000 West Virginia residents said that they needed recovery programs to help them overcome their opioid use disorder but did not receive the help they required. During the same time, 8 percent of all the residents of West Virginia - about 123,000 residents in total - reported abusing other illicit substances.

But what are the most commonly abused drugs in West Virginia? Consider the following:

  • Other Opiates
  • Methamphetamines
  • Marijuana
  • Heroin
  • Cocaine
  • Alcohol

In 2008, more than 93 percent of all the drug overdose fatalities reported in this state were linked to opioids (other than heroin). Among these people, only 44 percent had a legal prescription for the medication they were taking.

Between 1994 and 2004, the state also reported a percentage increase of more than 550 in the number of local residents who experienced a drug overdose. By 2007, it had 3 drug courts.

In these courts, more than 50 percent of the drug cases reported in 2006 involved crack cocaine. Regular cocaine and marijuana came second and third in terms of the cases reported in West Virginia.

The same year, 405 lives were lost to drug related incidents. Similarly, the DEA made a total of 113 arrests for a drug violation and confiscated more than 5 kilograms of cocaine in the state.
